The Trust Chronicles is a blog hop and collaborative project between 5 historical romance authors. Our desire is to bring you lasting hope through these letters, grounded in trust in our Lord, and written from the fictional viewpoints of each book’s heroine. We’re so glad to have you join the event. Each day this week, a new Trust Chronicles post will go live, complete with a letter and a new giveaway for that blog post.

Click here to read more about the project and enter to win the one-of-a-kind, Trust Chronicles antique keepsake box, containing each heroine’s letter, hand-inscribed by the author, and a special keepsake to accompany each letter.

To find your way to the other four blog posts and enter each of the five Trust Chronicles prize bundle giveaways, read on! We have a list for you at the bottom of this post.

For those of you who have “hopped” over here from the other Trust Chronicles blogs, my name is Karen Barnett and I am thrilled to be a part of this project. My debut novel, MISTAKEN, will release on July 2 and is set in 1926 Port Angeles, Washington.

Since Prohibition made a criminal of her father and her only brother, Laurie prays to find one man worthy of her trust. Convinced that newcomer Daniel Shepherd is connected with her brother’s gang of rumrunners, Laurie turns to a handsome federal agent for help. But first impressions are never what they seem.

Laurie’s Letter

April 5, 1926

Dear Johnny,

I’m dashing off this quick note because I have some important information and I’m not sure I’ll see you in time. Not to mention, lately all we seem to do is argue.

Amelia was disappointed you weren’t in church this morning, but I assured her you had worked late at the mill. (Now you’ve got me lying for you.) I’m writing because Pastor Yoder introduced us to a newcomer. His name is Samuel Brown—and, Johnny—he’s an agent with the Bureau of Prohibition. You said no one would come looking for you, but obviously you were wrong.

I’m sure you’ll see common sense now. I can’t believe you ever thought this was a good idea. After growing up with Dad’s drinking, I thought you of all people would never go into rumrunning. You keep saying I should trust you—but how can I when you’re sneaking around at night?

I’ve always prayed for a trustworthy man in my life. And what does God give me? You? Dad? I met your friend, Daniel Shepherd, recently. He acted all innocent and charming at first, but obviously—since he was there on the bluff in the middle of the night—he must be part of your gang, also. Pharmacist by day, rumrunner at night? This world is going crazy. I see no one to trust, except myself. Now this government man drops into our lives. Maybe he’s here to put you on the straight and narrow. Perhaps he’s worthy of my trust. I’m sure you would disagree, but at least Agent Brown’s on the right side of the law.

You will need to watch out for this man, Johnny. He’s a friendly sort, devilishly handsome, and seems to have a gift for putting people at ease. Even Amelia seemed drawn to him. Don’t get jealous, she assured me she only has eyes for you. Of course, if she knew what you’d been up to, she might see things differently.

Since you missed church, I wanted to tell you that Pastor Yoder quoted Proverbs 3:5-6 in his sermon. “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Johnny, I don’t know what kind of desperation has driven you to make this choice, but maybe its time you started trusting Him. Your path has meandered all over, and you could certainly use some divine direction. I’m sure God’s path must be better.

Maybe there’s a lesson for me in these verses as well. I’m so busy trying to cover for you and Dad that I’m running in circles instead of walking a straight line. Perhaps rather than seeking a man to trust, I should be turning my trust over to the only one who’s truly worthy of it.

My prayer at this moment is that my letter will make you reconsider what you’re doing. I know we both spoke harsh words last time we met, but it’s only because I was so afraid for you. I’m even more fearful now that I know a revenuer is in town. You’re my only brother and I love you. Please… be careful.

Your loving sister,
Laurie

  • Karen, I am so excited that this book will be available in July, just in time to read it laying in the hammock in the back yard.

You asked who I trusted with my secrets. Well, at my age there aren’t many earth shattering secrets to be hidden from people but the few I have are shared with my daughter. Since you know her, you can understand how good she is at keeping secrets and also knocking some sense into you if there is no need for it to be a secret. Besides I can’t hide anything from her, she always finds out, so I must trust her anyway.

    • Yep, I DO know who you are talking about, Victoria, and she is good at keeping secrets and has kept a few of mine over the years. Not that I’ve ever had any that were very interesting! And having a friend (or daughter, in your case) who can knock sense into you is a wonderful thing.

  • What a powerful letter….so much hurt…how do things turn out? Hmm…..
I am very trustworthy…Laurie can trust me. I have one special friend whom I can trust completely (other than God, of course). She is there to listen, to advise, to pray….and I am there for her as well. I thank God for sending me such a wonderful, trusting friend. God bless.

  • I actually have 2 people that I trust with my secrets – one is my best friend of almost 35 years & the other is my aunt (her only child died when he was 16 years old & she has always been like a 2nd mother to me).

This sounds like such an interesting book – hope I win a copy of it, thanks for the opportunity!

    bonnieroof60@yahoo.com

  • Wow, what a great letter! It seems like Laurie had problems finding the right person to trust… I’ve had times like that too. But I know that I can always trust the Lord, as well as my best friend and my mom. =)

Love the cover, btw- so pretty and mysterious!

    lubell1106(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Laurie definitely has some trust issues. I’m glad you have some trustworthy people in your life. I’m in love with Mistaken’s cover, too. The artists at Abingdon Press did a fantastic job matching the mood of the story.

  • How intriguing! I can’t wait to hear more about this handsome revenuer, although I worry that Laurie’s going to be put into an uncomfortable situation. Great letter.

And my husband is the one I tell everything to. He endures my ramblings rather well.

    Can’t wait to read this!

    • Uncomfortable situation? Oh, yes, Laurie will definitely have a few of those! And those husbands–they have to put up with a lot, don’t they? My husband, too. I think he’s finally grown accustomed to me talking about imaginary people.

  • This book sounds so good! I’d love to be able to read it.

There are really two people I trust with my “secrets.” I’m such an open book though, that I don’t really have “secrets.” My two people are the best friends that are closer to me than sisters. In fact, I consider them to BE sisters. One I’ve only known about 10 years, the other, my entire life. So these two ladies have seen my heart hurts and pains and tears. And I love them both to death.

    dawn(dot)janis(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Thanks for sharing, Dawn. I don’t have many secrets, either. Maybe that’s why I enjoy writing about people who do. 🙂 I’m glad you are blessed with such good friends.

  • Prohibition sounds fascinating – I’d love to read your novel!

My “person” is my husband, although my best friend is a close second, and she was my “person” until I met my husband. 🙂

    michelleheumann(at)gmail(dot)com

  • This letter really pulls you into the whole book and makes you want to read it RIGHT NOW!!!
I have a very special friend that we both tell our inner thoughts and life’s issues with. We pray for each other constantly and God defi Italy brought us together about 8 years ago. Of course I do tell my husband everything also!! There’s just something about a best friend and the support you have for each other!!
Would LOVE to win this book!!

    smurchison@consolidated.net

  • Karen, (<— originally I wrote “Laurie” She felt that real!)
    *blushing*

WHAT an intriguing letter! I so want to know more of Laurie’s story and what’s happening. Oh, to read this letter that she’s written to her brother just tugged at my heart. I don’t know a whole lot about the prohibition era, but it’s fascinating and I can’t wait to read more about it through Mistaken. The cover is divine and the story has captured my attention so much, not to mention I’m a huge fan of the author herself! 🙂

  • What a letter. This has been such a blessing everyday to read the next letter. Very stirring and searching for what trust really and truly is, and it is always found with God. Whenever I have a trust issue I always turn to Proverbs 3:5-6 for more guidance. I can not wait until your book comes out. I can imagine that time in America was that turbulent with the prohibition.
    Margie Terheyden
    gtkatz81@comcast.net

    • I’m so glad you’re enjoying Trust Chronicles, Margie. It is such fun working with Regina, Joanne, Amanda, and Sarah, and such a blessing in my life, too. Trust has always been a tough issue for me, so I’m glad we have Proverbs 3 as a reminder.

  • KAREN thanks for taking part in this blog hop. I enjoyed reading Laurie’s letter I can’t imagine being in that situation. After reading her letter I want to find out the rest of her story.

I share almost everything with my sweet sister, it wasn’t that way when we were kids though. She is 11 years older than me and I might have been a tattle-tale when I was small!! lol

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Since this is the middle of May, that means there’s only six weeks to wait for this intriguing book.

Laurie sounds like a lot of people I know. People who yearn for just one person in whom they can confide. My special person is my husband. I know whatever I share with him will not go anywhere else.

But my most intimate thoughts go to my Lord. He’s the only one with the power to change things.

    • You are a wise woman, Pat, and a good friend! Six weeks, wow. It’s coming so fast! I can’t wait for Mistaken to reach the hands (and hopefully hearts) of readers.

  • Great letter and intriguing invite to read the story behind it. I am nearly 60 years old and can truthfully say there are only a handful of people that I entrust with my heart cry secrets and prayer requests but thankfully I do have that in my life and am eternally grateful that I can bring every care and concern to the foot of my savior and know that He holds my heart in His loving and faithful hands. Praise God for that!

    • I tend to be pretty private, too, Janette. Your description is peferct–“He holds my heart in His loving and faithful hands.” I love that image. Thanks for sharing!

  • Karen, your letter just has me yearning on behalf of Laurie– and I can’t wait to open the pages of this book and travel along with her as her story unfolds! As to who I share the closest-to-my-heart things with, I’m a fairly private person but when I pry myself open enough to share with someone, I’m so grateful to have people in my life who I can go to and know I’ll find Godly wisdom.

  • The only person, other then God that I trust with my secret of secrets would be my best friend, my husband. He always “has my back” And my heart is cherished by him 🙂
    Michelle Corning
    corningfamilyateastlinkdotca

    • I love how you say that, Michelle: “My heart is cherished by him.” That’s what trust is all about, isn’t it? Knowing someone cherishes you enough not to hurt you. Thank you for sharing that!

  • I am blessed to have three very special women in my life, people who know both my good and bad and it doesn’t seem to matter. I’m so grateful to God for giving them to me, and vice versa.
I love the way that Laurie cares for her brother, despite his flaws. That is a rare relationship, and I’m so glad you created it within the pages of this book. I can’t wait for my own copy!

    • Heidi, you are such a good friend! Yes, Laurie is steadfast in her loyalty to her family, and I admire that about her, even though it almost becomes her undoing.

  • After forty-three years of marriage, the person I trust most is my husband. There are other family members and a few friends, but my husband is number one.
The book sounds fascinating, a different time and topic. And I love lavendar!

    • Forty-three years–that’s wonderful, Connie! What a blessing to have such a solid, trust-filled marriage. I love lavender, too. Lavender is an important crop in the area of Washington where Laurie’s story takes place, so it seemed a natural combination. The lavender fields in bloom are amazing!

  • Karen, Your letter (or should I say Laurie’s letter?) has me anticipating the release of Mistaken. Though July is a wonderful month to read a new book right now it seems to far away :/ But I suppose I’ll have to be patient 🙂

    • Thanks, Hannah! I’m itching for July to arrive, too. I can’t wait for Mistaken to reach the hands and hearts of readers. This is my debut novel and I am SO excited! I hope you enjoy Laurie’s story. 🙂

  • I trust God & my husband with my secrets, your book sounds awesome! (rose blackard@gmail,com) Rose

  • Yes, I have that person…aside from being my best friend he is my hubby…so wonderful and I am so thankful for him…God gave me a wonderful man that is there for me. truckredford(at)gmail(Dot)Com would love to win!

  • What a great letter!! The letter makes me so curious about the book. I have one person I can trust with my secrets. It’s my Mother! She’s not only my Mother, but my best friend. I’ve never married and had lots of health problems duo to a medical error. She’s been with me through everything and I cannot think of anything I wouldn’t trust her with. I’ve been very blessed to have a wonderful Mother like her. Thank you for entering me in the giveaway!!
    barbmaci61(at)yahoo(dot)com

  • I really want to read this book now! So few Christian books that take place in the Roaring Twenties, this looks like a good one.

In answer to your question, my family knows most of my secrets since I really don’t have any. God knows all of them since He is the one I can talk to most. But for earthly “people” you will laugh, my two Malamutes and my kitty are the ones I tell the most, they listen without judgement. Hey, they even talk back to me 😉 But, honestly, for the most part I keep things to myself, I’m just not one that does the sharing thing very well.

Thank you for hosting this section of The Trust Chronicles! I have been enjoying the different posts.

    Blessings!
    Jasmine A.
    montanamade(at)gmail(dot)com

    • Jasmine, I certainly won’t laugh, because I regularly talk to my doxie, Mystery. I don’t have any secrets to tell her, but I whine to her on a regular basis. I figure most of my friends don’t want to hear me whine, but since Myst whines at me–she’s earned it. 🙂 So glad you’re enjoying Trust Chronicles. It’s been such a treat to work with Regina, Joanne, Amanda, and Sarah!

  • This sounds like it’s going to be a great read! To be honest, right now I am going through a rough time and the only One whom I can trust with tender secrets is my Savior, and I am so thankful He is trustworthy.

  • Oh the letter was so good. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Laurie’s Dad and Brother Johnny! The only person I can trust with my secrets besides God is my husband John. He is my biggest supporter as well as my bestest friend in the whole world! 🙂 The prize package sounds wonderful! Thank you so much for this giveaway. Winning your book (included in the prize package) would be awesome!

    Blessings!
    Judy B

  • I love this letter and can’t wait to read the book. I’m blessed with many people I can trust and confide in, from my husband and family, to sweet friends at church and in the writing community. But the yearnings of Laurie’s heart reflect how so many people feel!

    • Thanks, Sarah! You are fortunate to have such a supportive circle of people you can trust. I know I’ve gone to you for advice many times! I treasure our friendship. 🙂

  • I wonder if I am the only person who will admit trust is the hardest thing I have ever done. A child quickly learns when adults are not trustworthy but one Spring morning at the age of 9 I met my best friend. In this teacher I found love, worth and faith…
Your first novel? Looking forward to check it out and God bless,

  • Well, poor Laurie seems to have a pretty good reason to have trust issues. I hope her brother comes around and decides to leave the illegal activity behind him.

I have a few people, thankfully, that I can turn to- my husband, my mother-in-law, and my step-mother-in-law. That’s not to say that I can’t trust my mom…but she’s a worrier like I am. Instead of calming me down, she usually does the opposite! lol

    My email is mandycreasy(at)yahoo(dot)com

This contest is opening my eyes to some wonderful new authors and stories. I look forward to reading Mistaken when it comes out in July. 🙂

    • It sounds like you have a wonderful support system, Mandy. I can relate to your Mom. I’m a worrier, too. I’m so glad you’re enjoying Trust Chronicles!

  • What a great glimpse into the conflict of these characters. I look forward to reading this Karen!

A (slightly tongue in cheek) phrase thrown around our house is, “Trust no one.” But we often tag that with, “Except God.”

There are different people I trust with different aspects of my life. Even letting my guard down and acting silly and outgoing requires a great deal of trust for me.

    • Your fun phrase could be Laurie’s theme, Lori! I’m looking forward to reading your debut novel, too. I read the first chapters of Burning Sky–they’re amazing!

  • Eeeek! I love the summary of the novel & Laurie’s letter made it even better!

My “people” are my best friend, Holly – since age 3, my mom and my husband. I can truly be myself around them all.

Thank you for the chance to win!

    • How fun to have a best friend from such a young age! I bet you two know some great secrets about each other. I’m so glad you enjoyed Laurie’s letter. 🙂

  • This letter makes me want to read the book and find out how Laurie deals with Mr.Samuel Brown. Also if her brother turns his life around so that he can be trustworthy. My twin sister would be the one that knows all of my “secrets”. We have always been very close.

    • Laurie does have some fun (and not-so-fun) adventures ahead of her! 🙂 You are very fortunate to have a sister with whom to share your secrets. Maybe if Laurie’d had a sister, her story would have been very different!

  • I am very lucky to have two good friends and my sister in whom I can confide.

When I saw your name, I thought “I don’t recognize her”. No wonder! This is your debut novel. Wishing you the best, and look forward to reading it. By the way, I have a brother who is a pharmacist. Interested in seeing how this works in the novel.

    • It’s very exciting to be part of Trust Chronicles with my debut novel. It’s so much fun to connect with other fiction lovers. And I think you’ll like the pharmacist…

  • I’m looking forward to reading your first book when it’s released. I would love to win a copy. You ask who I would trust with my secrets – I would and do trust my youngest daughter. We are very close, and she seems to understand better than anyone when I am having difficulties. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.

  • This sounds like a wonderful book! You should get it added to the Goodreads website! Then I can add it to my “want to read” to ensure I won’t forget it AND others can get it recommended to them!

To answer your question: I implicitly trust my husband. I can share anything with him because he is such good, godly counsel and he points me to the gospel instead of shame or boasting. I trust him everyday to guide our marriage. He’s wonderful!!!!

  • This sounds like an interesting book. Thanks for offering it in this contest. To answer your question, my husband has heard his fair share of secrets from me.
    Brittany McEuen
    kbmceuen@yahoo.com

  • Sounds like a book I’d love to read.

I don’t have too many secrets these days but I have one very good friend with whom I have always been able to share anything.I really miss her since she moved to southwest Texas and I am still here in Tennessee.

    • I’ve been through that, too, Pam. When my kids were toddlers, a good friend of mine lived across the street. When they moved to Kansas, it was quite a blow. I hope you find a way to stay close, even with the miles between you.

  • This book sounds like a winner! I have several people I can trust, thankfully, and I know I can always trust my Heavenly Father!

    bcrug(at)myfairpoint(dot)net

  • Well, I loved it the minute you mentioned Port Angeles. And after reading only one letter, I already know I would love this book. To answer “who” is someone with whom I can share all my secrets, I would, first of all, say my husband of 46 years, but since he passed to the portal of Heaven in 2009, I must now answer, my best friend, Janet. She is a kind, loving, wise, servant of our Lord Jesus Christ, serving the elderly in her ministries in her Church. And she does it with such great depths of love. She will take time to listen to me anytime. And she has done exactly this on many many occasions, as I muddle my way through this grief journey, which is rapidly and completely changing my life. Except for God and Jesus and Janet, I don’t know if I would make it…..

Bless you for writing excellent compelling female Christian fiction for all of us who are just ‘readers’…..

“A Friend Loveth At All Times….Psalms…..
    Bonnie Walker

  • Well, my answer posted, but now it is not there?? So, to answer the question again, my husband of 46 years, would be my first choice, but since he passed into the portal of Heaven in 2009, my second choice is my friend Janet. She is a loving, warm-hearted, kind, frank, and servant of our Lord Jesus. She helps the elderly in her Church, and spends great hunks of time planning their events. Without Janet, Jesus, and some other close Christian females, I do not know how I would have survived these first four years of ‘widowing’…..

Bless you for writing compelling Christian fiction for those of us who are ‘readers’ only, and not writers. Thank you!

Laurie is searching for one person worthy of her trust. Do you have someone you trust with your secrets? Who is your “person”?

First, the Lord! Then porch-sitting with my friend, Marianne, to sort things through. And… my husband.

  • Karen, your book looks great. I write WWII and the 20s fascinate me. Making a note to pick up your book when it releases. If you want to do a guestpost, etc., at my blog, just let me know.

    • We all need a “Lucy” in our lives, don’t we? How wonderful you two have been friends for so long. I bet you know lots of fun things about each other! 🙂

Thanks for the opportunity to win.

    Blessings,

  • Karen, you have given Laurie an authentic voice and it’s perfect for this time period! I am pulled into her story and can’t wait to read the book.

Hmmm…who do I trust with my secrets? Well, I have a dear friend I met at a writer’s event 15 years ago and we became “email pals”. We have exchanged news and prayer requests for the past fifteen years–pretty special.

    • Thanks, Bonnie! It took me quite a while to get Laurie’s voice just right. I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s wonderful that you have a writer friend to share with. The five of us at Trust Chronicles have grown pretty close and the e-mails have been flying for the past few months. It’s nice to have friends who can be a listening ear and who can pray for each other as we navigate through life.

  • Congratulations on being published! How exciting! And you even wrote about one of my favorite time periods 😀

Laurie’s letter to her brother was heart-wrenching. Sibling bonds are so strong, and you captured that beautifully. You are truly gifted. When you become a famous author (oh, it’s happening), I’ll be able to say that I was one of your very first fans!

    nightowlreading[at]gmail[dot]com

    • Thanks, Jenny! Sibling bonds can be strong and tumultuous, that much is certain. And you’re a fan of the 20s? It was definitely a fun period to write about. There was so much happening at that time.

  • Sounds like a great read… With the perfect release date for taking to the Coattage this summer 🙂 my husband is my best friend, we set aside a time each day to talk with our tea and regroup!
