I just returned from a trip and one thing I enjoy about flying is l-o-n-g stretches of uninterrupted reading time. At home, there’s always kids, work, chores… not to mention TV and Facebook.
There’s something about a trip that makes you want to dive into a hefty novel.
This week I had the joy of reading In Golden Splendor by Michael K. Reynolds. A lush historical that takes place during the California Gold Rush, Seamus Hanley is an Irish immigrant who has little to live for until he discovers a letter containing a plea for help buried in the remains of a stagecoach crash. An unlikely hero, this war deserter finds a new lease on life when he sets eyes on the girl in the faded photograph.
In Golden Splendor is a compelling read laced with lush historical detail. Reynolds has a gift for creating a cast of characters that remind me of a Charles Dickens novel–even the most minor characters catch your attention, like flakes of gold hiding in the dirt.
In Golden Splendor is the second novel in the Heirs of Ireland series, but can be read as a stand alone, as well. Both In Golden Splendor and the first novel, Flight of the Earls, are available for Kindle as a $2.99 special today, but I’m not sure how long the promotion lasts.
I’m looking forward to reading book three in the series, Songs of the Shenandoah, which promises to bring the Hanley family back together at the onset of the American Civil War.
