You’ve probably already skimmed my formal bio, so you know the kinds of books I write and the awards on my shelf. But that’s just who I am on paper. Let’s get real and talk about the five “geekiest” things about me.
1. I’m a total geek about national parks.
I love everything about our national parks, and I even worked as a seasonal ranger at Mount Rainier back in the 90s. Getting to escort readers to our parks via the pages of my novels now feels like I’ve come full circle!
2. I’m also a total research nerd.
Set me up in a history museum, library, or archive, and I’m in heaven.
3. I run an Instagram account for a teddy bear.
I started RangerBear Adventures on Instagram a few years back, and now he has a bigger following than I do. RangerBear visits national parks and posts about outdoorsy stuff. You can also follow him on Facebook and he’s even taking to writing columns for my Compass newsletter.
4. I once kept a banana slug as a pet.
For a whole winter. Really!
(Don’t ask about the bat in my freezer).
5. I have NO sense of direction
“Not all who wander are lost.” Except for me. I’m always lost. Yet somehow I still managed to earn an advanced degree in geography.
(Bonus point if you get the Beatles reference in the photo).
Which of these quirks surprised you the most?
