The 2014 American Christian Fiction Writers Conference (ACFW) is quickly approaching, and I’m seeing many excited “Who’s going?” posts popping up on Facebook. I hadn’t planned on attending this year, but after one of my dear friends–Marilyn Rhoads–became a finalist in the ACFW Genesis contest, I couldn’t wait to cheer her on at the awards gala. So, I’ll be there!
Laurie Tomlinson is hosting a pre-conference meet-and-greet, using our blogs as a way to get to know each other better before we step into the hotel overflowing with hundreds of eager writers.
Even if you’re not attending ACFW, I hope you’ll enjoy this quick get-to-know-you-better post.
A little bit about me:
Name: Karen Barnett
Location: Oregon
What you write/tagline/trademark: Historical Romance. “Changing Times/Unchanging God.”
Place in the book world: I currently have two novels published by Abingdon Press. Mistaken released in 2013 and Out of the Ruins (first installment of a three-book series, the Golden Gate Chronicles) came out in May. Book two, Beyond the Ashes, is set to release in June of 2014, and I’m currently writing the third book of the series. I’m represented by Rachel Kent of Books & Such Literary.
On a scale of hugger to 10-foot-pole, please rate your personal space: I’m somewhere in the middle, actually.
The unique talking point that will get you going for hours: I’m a TV addict and a sci-fi fan, so I love Doctor Who, Star Trek, Stargate, and Firefly. Since I’m also a history geek, you can find me chatting about Outlander, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, and BBC period dramas, too. And no, I don’t watch television ALL the time, it’s just my favorite guilty pleasure.
Loved ones at home you’ll be missing: My sweet husband and my two kids (ages 15 and 12).
Conference goals we can pray for? I don’t have specific goals on this trip other than reconnecting with friends and encouraging new writers. God always surprises me with unexpected blessings at conferences, so I’ll keep my eyes open for those special moments.
Anything we can celebrate with you? The release of Out of the Ruins! I started pitching this story at conferences back in 2009 and am so excited to see it out in the hands (and hearts) of readers.
One or two ways we can help you build your platform? I’m putting together my first email newsletter, so I’d encourage people to subscribe on my website. I’d also love to connect on Facebook and Twitter.
Now that you know a little bit more about me, I hope you’ll check out Laurie’s page and meet some of the other writers attending ACFW this year. I can’t wait to see everyone!
Blessings!
Karen
I love your picture! It made me smile. Lovely post. Hopefully our paths will cross at conference.
Thanks, Stacey! It’s silly, but one of my favorite things about ACFW are the name tag ribbons. It’s such fun to look and see what everyone has dangling from their tags! They make great conversation starters.
Yay, Karen! I’m so glad you’ll be there this year. I wasn’t going to go either, but last month I decided to take the plunge and make the trip. I’m excited…and a little stressed. 🙂 I hope we’ll get to see each other while we’re there. I’d love to be able to say hi!
PS: Your website is really beautiful! Love it. 🙂
Hi Karen! Yay for your new release 🙂 I’ve been to Oregon before. It’s such a beautiful state. Have a safe flight in 2 weeks!
Hi Karen! Congrats on your new release and see you in St. Louis!
By the way, this is a pretty nifty comment form you have here. 🙂
Karen, I’m so happy that you’re going to be at conference! I can’t wait to catch up! 🙂
God always surprises me with unexpected blessings at conference, too! See you there!
